Scholarship History
Howard Kamin started the Scholarship Fund in 1983 with $300, believing that the Ag Club needed to be more than just a luncheon club. He discussed it with other members and went to the Bank of Louisville to start the endowment. It took five years to accumulate enough to award the first scholarship. Along with the initial checking account, the club decided to invest some of the funds into a Morgan Stanley account, which currently has approximately $170,000 in it. The club has previously done several fundraising projects, including silent auctions and working at both PGA Championships. Currently, many members are the “voice” of Freddy Farm Bureau and Kentucky Agriculture with financial assistance from the Kentucky Farm Bureau, which is greatly appreciated.
The scholarships are meant to provide some financial assistance to those students who are enrolled in an agricultural college with a major in an agricultural field.
Through the years, the scholarships have grown from just one scholarship of a few hundred dollars to where we now have 3 $4,000 scholarships each year. Since 2015, over $140,000 has been given out, and it is estimated that since the scholarship’s inception, over $300,000 has been given out to approximately 100 deserving students.
Howard Kamin’s dedication and perseverance have made the scholarship fund a tremendous success for the Ag Club and the community we serve.
